IDN RECEIVES FUNDING FROM THE CLAUDE WORTHINGTON BENEDUM FOUNDATION
TO PROVIDE TRAINING TO SUPPORT AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS
Inspiring Dreams Network is proud to begin partnering with the Benedum Foundation through a grant to expand work currently funded by The Greater Kanawha Foundation to support our training efforts with 17 afterschool programs in Kanawha, Lincoln, and Putnam Counties. This grant aims to provide training and resources to our partner afterschool programs, promoting a learning environment centered around positive youth development.
Afterschool programs often serve youth in some of the most at-risk environments who struggle with academic, mental health, and social-emotional needs. Our trainings build the capacity of youth-serving adults to address these multifaceted needs. This grant will allow us to support an additional 10 afterschool programs, including Logan County, for a total of 27 afterschool programs. This grant will also allow us to expand the timeframe for serving these programs by an additional six months and will support efforts to evaluate student outcomes related to staff participation in our training initiative.
IDN Youth Development Portal
Funded by the Pallottine Foundation of Huntington (first in 2021 and annually thereafter), Inspiring Dreams Network continues to develop our youth development resource portal to provide free resources to support youth in areas they commonly struggle with and often do not know where to turn to get the support and information they need. The portal serves three primary groups families, youth-serving adults, and youth who are impacted by poverty, substance use, dysfunctional families, adjudication issues, school suspensions, academic underachievement, and trauma. These youth often lack adequate family and community support to achieve wellness and inspiration for success.
The need for online resources has increased post-pandemic as prolonged exposure to the Covid 19 epidemic resulted in increased mental health struggles, including anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, social-emotional relationship struggles, academic disengagement and a lack of vision for their own futures. Our goal is to make IDN's youth portal a one-stop shop where our youth and the families and adults who support them can go to get support resources and help with issues they are experiencing. Our goal is to have the IDN Youth Development Portal become a common household resource for youth and families in need and the community organizations who serve them.
All of our resources go through a vetting process by experts in the field, ensuring that when our stakeholders go to our site that the resources are reliable and offer best practice, high quality support resources. The resources include a variety of media, including info graphics, games, videos, websites, curriculum, camps. event announcements, and so forth. The resources will be listed first by Broad category (academic supports, social-emotional development, and career investigation and planning) and then by sub-topics to help users drill down to specific topics. This year’s project includes funding for a full-time VISTA Volunteer, Project Coordination, Resource Vetting, and support for our webmaster to continuing designing pages, posting new resources, and removing outdated links and resources.
IDN PARTNERS WITH THE EDUCATION ALLIANCE TO PRODUCE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING TOOLKIT 2.0
Inspiring Dreams Network is pleased to have partnered with the WV Education Alliance to develop a Social Emotional Learning Toolkit to help mentors address the social, emotional, mental, and physical health of children in our schools. Dr. Barb Brady, Executive Director of IDN developed the Social Emotional Learning Toolkit 2.0, with support from John Barton and Candace Smith, IDN VISTAS, as a companion to the SEL Toolkit 1.0 developed during the height of the pandemic to help mentors teach coping skills.
SEL Toolkit 2.0 gives mentors strategies to embed their work with students in the existing multi-tiered system of support. The goal is to equip mentors to work as team members in the system of support, helping students navigate complex systems to improve school success and their overall well-being.
This toolkit also provides an overview of common mental health implications and “look fors” to help mentors identify when students need extra support. Additionally, the toolkit outlines evidence-based best practices for how mentors can support students in building resiliency and protective factors. The toolkit provides some tools and activities that mentors can use to help students address some of the issues they are struggling with, as well as, specific mentoring activities to help youth to overcome barriers and cope effectively.
