Candace Smith is a recent graduate of WVU, graduating this past Spring with majors in Sociology and Philosophy and minors in Psychology and Pre-Law.
Candace is from Branchland, WV - in Lincoln County - and enjoys listening to music, playing tennis, and spending time with friends and family. She applied for the AmeriCorps Summer VISTA Associate position at IDN because she is interested in working in the non-profit sector to assist the people of rural West Virginia.
During her time at IDN, Candace contributed over 100 best-practice resources to the Youth Development Resource Portal, constructed community needs assessments tools such as an interview guide and training needs survey, completed interviews with youth-serving adults in Clay and Mercer County, established connections with the WV Prevention Research Center's Youth Advisory Board and Dr. Adam Starks for future collaboration, attended training for grant-writing, facilitating focus groups, and fundraising, updated the contact and collaborator databases for IDN, and contacted over 200 people in the contact and training databases for interviews and feedback on the Resource Portal.
Candace is an advocate for drug policy reform and harm reduction. After her service in AmeriCorps, she plans to explore opportunities for graduate school and full-time work in the public health field.
